OUR CIRCLE

ABOUT LEAN IN

As a student organization at the University of Michigan, our Lean In circle is dedicated to building intergenerational connections for women in the sciences. Our work primarily centers around connecting undergraduate women in the sciences with professors, faculty, and professionals in the scientific diciplines. Beyond the biological sciences of biology, chemistry, and physics, we extend our reach to the fields of engineering, economics, and computer science. We have circle members studying each of these diciplines. Too often, young women are denied female role models in the sciences. Too often, we are not given the tools to succeed. Too often, we face discrimination and sexual harassment. We believe that building intergenerational connections will provide young women the skills and confidence to succeed in these difficult fields.

Primarily, we engage with faculty members through informal "coffee hours," where circle members meet professors for coffee. We find that this provides a relaxed atmosphere that fosters meaningful conversation. However, this structure is not monolithic and we welcome other venues and ideas.

In addition to connecting college students and professionals, our Lean In circle seeks to build connections with middle and high school girls through original community outreach programs as well as collaboration with WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) and FEMMES (Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering, and the Sciences).

EVOLUTION - AN INTERGENERATION CONNECTION

In a society where women are systematically subject to institutional and societal barriers, our vision is to educate, raise awareness and instill in young women and men the knowledge and capacity to embrace their potential. We aim to facilitate open dialogues about pertinent issues facing men and women. Using an intersectional framework, we bring together people from diverse backgrounds who are all united by the same vested interest in gender equality. We envision a global revolution that embraces women’s capabilities, starting here, with the University of Michigan.

Lean In is committed to offering women the ongoing inspiration and support to help them achieve their goals. If we talk openly about the challenges women face and work together, we can change the trajectory of women and create a better world for everyone.

LEAN IN SUPPORTS WOMEN IN 3 WAYS

COMMUNITY

We want all women to have the confidence and know-how to achieve their goals. This starts with an active and supportive community. Each day we’ll encourage an open exchange of ideas and information. We will also share Lean In Stories—short narratives of moments in life when we choose to “lean in” or “lean back” intended to inspire, teach and connect us.

EDUCATION

We offer a growing library of free online lectures on topics including leadership and communication. Produced in partnership with the Clayman Institute for Gender Studies at Stanford University and other well-known experts, these lectures offer women practical skills they can apply in their daily lives.

3

Lean In Circles are small groups that meet monthly to encourage and support each other in an atmosphere of confidentiality and trust. We provide the materials and support to run a successful Circle, including online spaces that make it easy for members to stay up-to-date and connected.
